Microfinance in Transition: Is Purpose at Risk? Join the 28th MFC Annual Conference to discuss strategic sector topics in Durrës, Albania, on 19–21 May 2026

Microfinance has long served as a crucial bridge between mission-driven funding and vulnerable communities, proving that financial inclusion can be both commercially viable and profoundly impactful. Today, however, the sector is undergoing deep transitions that challenge its foundations.
One of the most critical challenges lies in the dynamics of capital access. For years, MFIs have signaled constraints in securing growth capital, with most funding available in the form of debt. As Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) explore reducing their stakes in mature MFIs, questions arise about who will step in to fill the gap — and whether new investors will be equally committed to safeguarding purpose. The sector must ensure that capital flows remain mindful of mission, not just financial returns.
At the same time, microfinance is being reshaped by powerful external forces: climate disruption, rapid advances in AI and digitalization, geopolitical shifts, or new regulatory requirements are redefining the operating environment for MFIs. These pressures are forcing institutions to adapt in diverse ways. The central question is how purpose can be secured and embedded across these varied paths, ensuring that mission remains the compass even as models evolve.
This conference is a vital call to action for the MFC community to stop simply reacting to change and instead take ownership of the sector’s future. Over two days, we will define the principles and governance structures needed to safeguard mission and impact, ensuring that financial performance never outweighs social purpose.
Structured around the indispensable levers of Capital, Climate, and Code, the MFC 2026 conference will provide actionable strategies. We will explore how MFIs can move beyond green loans to become true climate resilience agents for their clients; how to govern the ethical integration of AI for micro-entrepreneurs; and most critically, how to establish a Stewardship Imperative to attract the impact capital required to navigate capital constraints and uncertainty created by regional and global shifts.
This is more than a conference – it’s a call to shape the future of microfinance.
Book your calendar and join the dialogue. The registration will open in February 2026
