Climate-related risks increasingly affect financial institutions through their operations, portfolios, clients, and communities. This practical webinar will introduce IFC’s climate governance approach and show how social finance providers can move beyond compliance by embedding climate considerations into board oversight, strategy, risk management, internal controls, and disclosure. Through focused discussion, audience polls, and practical examples, participants will explore proportionate actions that can be adapted to the size, maturity, and operating context of their institutions.

Why this topic is particularly relevant and timely

Climate change creates both financial risks and business opportunities for social finance providers. Boards and senior management need clear roles, appropriate climate competence, reliable information, and practical governance arrangements to oversee these issues. The session is timely as investor expectations and climate-related reporting requirements continue to evolve, while institutions seek workable approaches that preserve their social mission and client affordability.

Key insights and practical takeaways

By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the business case for climate governance in social finance.
  • Distinguish the respective roles of the board, management, and control functions.
  • Define practical actions and identify material climate-related risks and opportunities across institutional operations and lending portfolios.
  • Apply IFC’s Climate Governance Progression Matrix to assess current practices and prioritize improvements.

The webinar is designed for:

  • board members
  • chief executive officers
  • senior managers
